Our Society is totally Co-Dependent When it Comes to Technology!

Hello again,

Isn't it wonderful to see again how many ways that technology can help you on a daily basis. Take your car for example. It can tell you where to go via a GPS system, it can tell you what is wrong by sending a diagnostic e-mail to you, it can talk back when you talk to it - no really, this does exist...and it can record details on performance, errors, miles driven, miles per gallon, air pressure - in each tire, tell you when the door or trunk is open, when you need to put on a seatbelt, when it is low in water, oil and fuel and in all scenarios - it is like a friend. However...there are still some things which require getting on the ground and looking at from the pavement like a leak in a gas line which is a serious issue. It can spark and create a fire leaving you with a carbecue on the side of the road. It can leak the gasoline out like Hansel and Gretel giving the car a path to follow back home. This is not preferred as gasoline is too much money!

So, when I heard that the our car had just this kind of leak it made me think....Why did the computer on board not tell me the car was leaking gas??? Sure, I smelled a faint scent but there was never a puddle or spot on the driveway....until this morning that is. It made me think what a wonderful possibility it would be to have key components that are not already measured by computer systems onboard to be monitored perhaps with an RFID tag and the reader on the car could sense any changes in the status therefore triggering an urgent message to the driver - you are leaking gasoline, get to a service facility immediately!

The more I thought the more I remembered sometimes you just have to get dirty. But there are people out there who are so bound to their GPS systems, they can not find there way home without it. Never mind the cell phone, iPhone or Blackberry - I personally have turned around and gone home to get my phone several times when accidently leaving it at home. Perish the thought if we could not offer some pithy response to an old friend on Facebook about their latest Tweet. And the list goes on.....

Take a moment to remember the original The Day The Earth Stood Still - from the 1950's - when they lost power for 30 minutes. Imagine what happens when that happens now. Well, we got a glimpse at that with a computer glitch in the air traffic control systems today. Hartsfield-Jackson was a mess as were passengers in other cities. I dare you to say we are not co-dependent on technology now!
