In an article in the Times (London), the end may actually be near and this is not a 2012 doomsday proposition.
Bottom line, the existing IP address system will essentially run out of numbers - as each of us likely have several ourselves. One can readily understand how this can happen.
It involves switching from an IPv4 configuration to an IPv6 configuration. Here is the good news: both Apple and Windows have built in this archtecture change needed for years. So before you run out and worry that the Internet will stop all of a sudden next year - take a breath and relax. The sky is not falling........yet!
